Strawberry

This modest, mid-century ranch in Mill Valley was surrounded by small, perimeter spaces defined by juniper and decaying wood retaining walls. Large and ample windows beckoned for strong indoor-outdoor connections, while a large Deodar Cedar anchored the backyard.

Creating privacy was paramount, yet large play spaces were needed for the family. A series of useable spaces were implemented using a simple palette of materials that kept the design streamlined without overwhelming the small spaces. Entry steps with horizontal walls invite guests to the front door, while a four-panel folding gate provides privacy to the backyard, yet opens to allow full access to the lawn areas for play. A fire pit offers warmth in the evenings, while a water-feature creates a focal point, provides wildlife habitat and masks traffic noise. A play structure, dining patio and vegetable garden complete the backyard. Olive trees and a curved wall buffer bedrooms from the street.
