Small Lot Wilderness

This suburban lot’s backyard was transformed from what was a fairly typical, lawn-dominated, suburban yard into both a native habitat for flora and fauna as well as an aesthetic experience for the homeowners who wanted to view and enjoy the dynamic natural activity. A large lawn was torn out, re-graded and planted to create a native meadow and meadow stream. Consulting with the homeowner, who is a geologist and avid hiker, special soils and stone were imported to extend the wet margins of the artificial stream. Several species of native birds, insects and other wildlife have populated this newly created oasis and have made the native plants and stream environment their home in this converted backyard.
