Mill Valley
A sloping site with distant views of the mountains was loosely organized with a series of terraces that allow for an easy flow from one space to the next. A combination of bluestone, concrete and decking were used to create a composition of spaces that interact with each other, yet are distinct. The design incorporates the guest house into the landscape, without compromising its privacy, by providing a comfortable level of separation. At the bottom of the driveway, a semi-open fence acts as a buffer for the yard. The transition is enhanced by a natural looking spring emanating from beneath a large boulder. A bluestone patio with gas fire pit overlooks a large spa that sits flush with the Ipe’ hardwood decking to create a clean and simple edge. A bocce court is nestled against a synthetic lawn both of which continue the stepping planes of the design, while a trampoline and fruit trees reside on the hillside below to avoid disturbing the views.
